RPE turns the vague idea of 'how hard was that?' into a number. On the modern lifting scale, an RPE of 10 means you couldn't have done another rep, a 9 means one rep left, an 8 means two, and so on. This makes intensity something you can target and communicate.
Its main value is autoregulation: instead of forcing a fixed weight on a bad day, you adjust load to hit a target RPE, training hard enough to progress without burning out. It pairs naturally with RIR (reps in reserve), which counts the same thing from the other direction.
